What To Expect At Mass

Our Eucharistic Service (also called the Mass, the Divine Liturgy or Holy Communion) is anchored in the Anglican (the Church of England) tradition and in the Book of Common Prayer (an online version can be accessed here).  We follow Christ’s commandments to the Apostles on Holy Thursday to “Do this in memory of me” and the action being fulfilled on Good Friday we continue in the Apostles’ teaching, the Breaking of the Bread (the Mass) and in the Prayers.

Mass is divided into two parts:

I - The Liturgy of the Word

The Liturgy of the Word, which contains a reading from the Old Testament (except during Easter then it is from the Acts of the Apostles),a Psalm, a New Testament Lesson (from one of the letters or the Book of Revelation) and a reading from one of the Gospels (to read the Sunday readings please click here). A brief homily follows where the readings are explained and an encouraging message is given. Recitation of the Creed and the Prayers of the People follow.

II - The Liturgy of the Eucharist

The second part of the service is the Liturgy of the Eucharist.  Here bread and wine are brought forward and we believe are changed into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.  Those baptized Christians who wish to receive are invited AND ENCOURAGED to come forward.  The priest says “The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven” to which the person responds “Amen”.  The priest will then either place the host in the persons hand or on their tongue (totally your preference).  Someone will follow the priest with the chalice and say, “The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation”, to which the person responds “Amen”.  Here the individual can either drink from the chalice or dip the host in the chalice (again, totally your choice).  If you do not feel worthy to receive or are not baptized, please still come forward, place your hands over your chest and the priest will offer you the blessing of the church.

Mass then concludes

…with a prayer, a blessing and a dismissal urging us to take Christ into the world around us!

There is usually some light refreshments in the undercroft of the church where good food and fellowship is shared - please join us and make yourself known so we can get to know you better!
